Under the tenure of President Donald Trump, some of the key HHS positions are remaining vacant mostly at the subcabinet level. In the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), hundreds of sub-cabinet level positions remain unfilled even today. A noteworthy position that is yet to be filled is the Director for the Medicare program. However, efforts are being made to fill these positions soon.
President Trump recently nominated Brett Giroir for the position of the HHS Assistant Secretary for Health. Currently serving as the President and CEO of the biopharmaceutical company ViraCyte, Giroir has also previously served in the Texas GM Health Science Center as well as numerous other administrative roles for the federal government.
For the position of HHS Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE), the economist Stephen Parente was nominated. While serving in this position, Parente will act as the principal policy advisors and researchers for HHS Secretary Tom Price. He is currently serving at the University of Minnesota as a professor.
For the role of HHS Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Abuse, President Trump has nominated Elinore McCance-Katz. While serving this position, McCance-Katz will assist in guiding the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Previously, McCance-Katz was the Chief Medical Officer for SAMHSA from the period of 2013 to 2015. She currently serves as the Chief Medical Officer for the Rhode Island Department of Behavior Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals.
The US President appointed Charmaine Yoest as the HHS Assistant Secretary of Public Affairs. While serving in this position, Yoest would be responsible for carrying out the public relation efforts of the Agency. Previously, Yoest was the President and CEO of the pro-life advocacy group, Americans United for Life.
Appointed as the new HHS Deputy Assistant Secretary for Overnight and Investigations is Sean Hayes, who formerly worked in the House Oversight and Budget Reform Committee and the House Energy and Commerce Committee as a congressional staffer. Besides that, appointed as the Administrator for the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) is George Sigounas.
In the previous months, the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee (HELP) considered nominating Scott Gottlieb for the Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration. Along with these new positions, President Trump has also made a new vacancy by proposing the resignation of Surgeon General Vivek Murthy. The nominations were a part of the Trump Administration’s efforts to eliminate all the appointees that served under the tenure of former US President, Barack Obama. For the HHS Secretary Tom Price, these key nominations and appointments will provide all the vital administrative and advisory roles.
